The Story
The fun pun clock (ふんぷんくろっく) was designed to help children who cannot yet read a clock develop the desire to learn. Its playful name comes from the way minutes are read in Japanese - 5 fun, 10 pun, 15 fun, 20 pun, alternating sounds that inspired the clock’s cheerful name.
Created by designer Yoko Dobashi, who brings the perspective of a parent, the clock was developed with guidance from the Japan Montessori Research Institute to support children’s natural understanding of time. The dial incorporates subtle design cues inspired by Montessori education, helping children gradually recognise hours and minutes through clear visual structure.
Carefully crafted from plywood, the clock combines educational function with a calm, minimal design that blends naturally into modern interiors.
- Size: φ 305 x D48 mm
- Material: Plywood, Glass
- Movement: Step second movement
Winner of the Good Design Award (Japan) 2017 and the Kids Design Award, the fun pun clock encourages children and parents to explore time together. When children begin to show interest in clocks, reading the numbers aloud can turn learning into a shared moment of curiosity and connection.
